APM Terminals will develop and operate a new terminal at Suape Port in Pernambuco Oblast, Brazil, which is one of the main ports in Brazil and Latin America. APM Terminals plans to invest approximately $500 million in the terminal. Once all regulatory approvals are obtained, APM Terminals is expected to complete facility construction within 2 years, and the new terminal is expected to start operating with a throughput capacity of 400000 TEU, an increase of 55% compared to the current capacity of the terminal.
Leo Huisman, General Manager of APM Terminals Americas, said, 'Suape Port has great potential for growth. Our vision is to invest in a terminal to add additional growth opportunities to the northeastern region of Brazil. We believe that the region will have more competition, unleash potential for exporters/importers, and attract new cargo flows
This transaction is the first major acquisition announced by Keith Svensen, the new CEO of APM Terminals, after taking office. Keith Svensen has stated, 'We hope for moderate growth, that is, investing in a few terminals annually, as long as the terminals align with Maersk's business and the investment opportunities are good.' It is said that APM Terminals is also negotiating to invest $500 million in the Suez Canal, but the group has not officially confirmed the news.
APM Terminals currently operates more than 70 terminals worldwide and 15 terminals in 8 countries in the Americas. It is pointed out that it has been investing in Brazil as the country is privatizing its port business to support future development. Suape Port will become APM Terminals' fifth terminal in Brazil.
