When choosing container shipping, you can choose between full container shipping or LCL shipping based on the size of the item you want to ship. At this point, we need to understand how the cost of the container is calculated in order to make our moving journey worry free and avoid being deceived and incurring additional costs.
1. Freight for full container cargo
a. The calculation of full container freight charges, if the boxes used are owned by the shipping company, there are provisions for high and low freight charges; If the box belongs to the shipper, there are other regulations.
b. In the case of full container transportation, the carrier's responsibility for receiving and delivering containers is usually from the dock yard to the dock yard. Therefore, the freight and related fees charged by the carrier only include the fees from the yard to the yard, while the fees outside the yard at both ends of the dock are borne by the cargo owner.
2. Freight for LCL cargo
At present, the calculation of LCL freight charges for container transportation by various shipping companies is mainly based on the calculation standards for bulk cargo freight, but the following basic points should be mastered:
a. The calculation and collection method for sea freight of LCL cargo is similar to that for general cargo freight in the case of liner transportation. It only adds container related fees, such as LCL service fees, but no longer charges the terminal for receiving general cargo. The calculation basis for these freight and related fees is the weight or size of each piece of goods specified in the freight book formulated by the shipping company. However, the LCL service fee for priced goods is charged based on the weight or size of the goods, whichever is higher.
b. The calculation of LCL freight charges by shipping companies or other carriers is based on their responsibilities and expenses. Due to the fact that LCL cargo is packed and unpacked by the freight station, which should be owned or under the jurisdiction of the carrier, and the carrier's responsibility is from the export country's freight station to the import country's freight station, all expenses and related responsibilities incurred before and after delivery are borne by the shipper.
c. Due to the fact that LCL cargo involves different recipients, LCL cargo cannot accept requests from the shipper for port selection or change of destination port. Therefore, there is no additional fee for port selection or change of destination port for LCL cargo.
d. The minimum shipping cost for LCL is charged per bill of lading.
3. Freight for group cargo in containers
a. Regardless of whether the goods are shipped as LCL or FCL, the weight or size of the pallet itself should be deducted when calculating the freight. However, this deduction should not exceed 10% of the weight or size of the group goods (goods plus pallets), and the excess part will still be charged according to the rate specified for the goods on the pallet. But there are also some routes that habitually do not deduct the weight or size of full container pallets when calculating shipping costs.
b. For group goods that comply with the regulations and requirements related to freight rates and are shipped as LCL cargo, they can be treated like general cargo and given freight discounts. However, for group goods shipped as LCL cargo, they cannot enjoy preferential freight rates.
4. Surcharge for overweight, overlength, and oversized cargo
a. According to the regulations of the freight book, additional fees will be charged for overweight, overlength, and oversized goods.
b. There is no additional charge for overweight, overlength, or oversized goods in full containers.
c. If it is the receipt or delivery of full container cargo, or the receipt or delivery of full container cargo, an additional 50% surcharge will be charged for overweight, extra long, or extra large cargo according to the provisions of the freight book.
